Implementation Period: December 2022 – March 2023
Location: Tangerang Regency, Indonesia
Focus Areas: Mangrove Restoration · Coastal Climate Resilience · Environmental Education · Community Engagement
Samantha Aulia Ramadhanti, a Youth Climate Champion from Indonesia, spearheaded the “Tanam Taman Mangrove” project, an initiative born from her deep concern for coastal degradation and the urgent need for climate resilience in her community. Her journey was inspired by the visible impacts of climate change on Indonesia’s coastlines, particularly in Tangerang Regency.
The project centered on mobilizing local volunteers for mangrove restoration efforts, coupled with comprehensive environmental education. This hands-on approach aimed to not only rehabilitate critical ecosystems but also to instill a sense of ownership and responsibility within the community. Through “Tanam Taman Mangrove,” Samantha aimed to empower local youth and residents to become active stewards of their environment, understanding the vital role mangroves play in protecting coastlines and mitigating climate change impacts.
The multi-faceted project involved collaboration with local government bodies, environmental organizations, and community leaders to ensure a holistic and sustainable impact. By combining direct action with educational outreach, the project sought to create a lasting legacy of environmental awareness and resilience, fostering a generation committed to protecting Indonesia’s precious coastal ecosystems.

Volunteers recruited and trained
Capacity-building workshops
The project initiated with a robust volunteer recruitment drive, attracting 76 enthusiastic individuals from local communities and universities. These volunteers underwent intensive capacity-building workshops, focusing on mangrove ecology, restoration techniques, and community engagement strategies. Training sessions were facilitated by experts from the Marine and Fisheries Department and WWF Indonesia, ensuring that volunteers were equipped with both theoretical knowledge and practical skills for effective implementation. The workshops also covered safety protocols and basic first aid for field activities.
Strong partnerships were forged with key stakeholders, including the Tangerang Regency Marine and Fisheries Department, local community leaders, schools, and environmental NGOs like WWF Indonesia. These collaborations were crucial for securing necessary permits, accessing suitable restoration sites, and integrating the project within broader local development plans. Institutional partners provided technical expertise, logistical support, and helped disseminate educational materials, ensuring the project's activities were well-aligned with national environmental goals and community needs.
Beyond direct restoration, a significant component of the project involved public outreach to raise awareness about mangrove conservation and coastal climate resilience. This included interactive sessions in local schools, community gatherings, and digital campaigns. Samantha hosted several Instagram Live sessions and participated in local radio broadcasts to reach a wider audience, sharing project updates, educational content, and inspiring stories from the field. Educational materials, including brochures and infographics, were developed and distributed to further amplify the message of environmental stewardship.
“Samantha's dedication to mangrove restoration is truly inspiring. The ‘Tanam Taman Mangrove’ project has not only revitalized our coastal areas but has also ignited a passion for environmental protection within our youth. The commitment of the volunteers and the positive feedback from the community are testaments to the project's success and its potential for long-term impact.” - Regent of Tangerang Regency
“Being a part of Tanam Taman Mangrove has been a transformative experience. I learned so much about the importance of mangroves and felt empowered to contribute directly to our community's resilience. It's more than just planting trees; it's about building a stronger, more environmentally aware community.” - Project Volunteer
A significant lesson learned from “Tanam Taman Mangrove” is the critical importance of sustained volunteer engagement and continuous education. The project demonstrated that well-trained and motivated volunteers are the backbone of successful community-led environmental initiatives. The positive impact of digital campaigns (IG Live, radio) in raising awareness highlighted the need to integrate diverse communication channels for broader reach. Logistical challenges in coordinating large groups and transporting materials to restoration sites emphasized the need for detailed planning and contingency measures in future projects.
The project's sustainability is bolstered by the strong community partnerships and the active involvement of local government. Continued engagement with schools and local communities through educational programs will ensure that the message of mangrove conservation endures. Future phases will focus on establishing a monitoring framework to track mangrove growth and ecosystem health, developing advanced training modules for volunteers, and exploring opportunities for eco-tourism to create self-sustaining revenue streams for long-term maintenance and expansion of the mangrove restoration efforts.
